It's official. Nintendo is once again changing the face of gaming with the unveiling of the new Wii U. The follow up to the wildly successful Wii, fans can expect more precision, better graphics, breakthrough GamePad controller, and endless gameplay possibilities-and now we have a rumored release dates and prices! Those in the know are pointing towards a November 11 release date, with retail bundle prices of $249, $299, and $349.

Perhaps the most exciting feature of the Wii U is the incredible GamePad controller, which features a 6.2 inch touchscreen, along with the usual analog controllers and buttons that you would find on a standard controller. Offering panoramic views and immersive gameplay courtesy of built in sensors, it adds a new level of gameplay for the Wii fan. And let's talk about the games–once again Nintendo stepped it up with asymmetric gameplay, integrated screens, and increased multiplayer options, just to name a few. Even the console got a makeover, with a compact, rounded body.

Social network fans, take note, because Nintendo is joining the party with a socially connected hub called Miiverse. This is your chance to connect with other players using your Mii character to share what you are playing, your game stats, and invite them to join. You'll be able to access it not only through the Wii U itself, but via PCs, mobile phones, or any other Web–enabled devices. You can also browse the Internet, video chat, or download games at the Nintendo eShop.

When it comes to visuals, the Wii U delivers with HD support up to 1080p, as well as a variety of support including HDMI, Component, and RGB. It comes with four streaming apps for Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, and YouTube, and more could possibly become available. And for those worried about whether they can play their Wii favorites on the next–gen model, rest assured, the Wii U is backwards compatible.

Remember when and his pal Luigi were the power couple of gaming? It may seem hard to remember, but at the time, those were cutting-edge concepts and graphics. It's amazing to see how far Nintendo has come, and how it has continued to shape the future of gaming over the last two-plus decades.

Take a walk down memory lane to see how Nintendo has evolved from the original NES to the ground breaking Wii U.

nintendo NES

NINTENDO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM:

The 8-bit video game console was released in North America in 1985. As the best-selling gaming console of its time, the NES helped revitalize the US video game industry following the video game crash of 1983, and set the standard for subsequent consoles of its generation. With the NES, Nintendo introduced a now-standard business model of licensing third-party developers, authorizing them to produce and distribute software for Nintendo's platform. In 2009, the Nintendo Entertainment System was named the single greatest video game console in history by IGN.

SUPER NINTENDO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM:

The 16-bit video game console was released in North America in the early 90s. The console introduced advanced graphics and sound capabilities compared with other consoles at the time. Additionally, development of a variety of enhancement chips helped to keep it competitive in the marketplace. The SNES was a global success, becoming the best-selling console of the 16-bit era despite its relatively late start and the fierce competition it faced from Sega's Genesis console—even remaining popular well into the 32-bit era.

NINTENDO 64:

Named for its 64-bit CPU, the console was released in North America in 1996. The N64 suggested retail price was $199 and it was later marketed with the slogan "Get N, or get Out!" The console was released in at least eight variants with different colors and sizes. The N64 sold 32.93 million units worldwide. Of the consoles in the fifth generation, the Nintendo 64 was the last contender and the most technologically advanced. However, the console's storage medium had limitations that harmed the market competitiveness.

GAMECUBE:

Released in 2001, the Nintendo GameCube was the first Nintendo console to use optical discs as its primary storage medium. In contrast with the GameCube's contemporary competitors, the PlayStation 2 and Xbox, the GameCube uses miniDVD-based discs instead of full-size DVDs. It introduced a variety of connectivity options to Nintendo consoles, and was the fourth Nintendo console to support online play officially. The GameCube sold 21.74 million units worldwide.

Wii:

The seventh generation console was released in 2006, and as of June 2011, the Wii leads the generation over the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in worldwide sales. A distinguishing feature of the console is its wireless controller, the Wii Remote, which can be used as a handheld pointing device and detects movement in three dimensions. Another distinctive feature of the console is WiiConnect24, which enables it to receive messages and updates over the Internet while in standby mode.

Wii U:

The successor to the Wii and the very first of 8th generation consoles, the Wii U was unveiled during the E3 press conference on June 7, 2011. But it wouldn't be until November 30, 2012 that the console was available for purchase. It supports 1080p graphics, 2GB of memory (more than 20 times the memory of Wii), and a brand new GamePad controller that allows gameplay to continue independent of the TV.

Perhaps the largest buzz surrounding the launch of the Wii U is the new touchscreen controller. With a glossy face and smooth contours, the controller features a 6.2 inch LCD touchscreen in the center that eliminates the barrier between you and the television. By creating a second window in the game, the innovative controller offers a panoramic view of the game–giving the game a 360 degree angle. Whether you face the screen, the wall behind you, or the ceiling, you'll get a view as if you were in the game yourself.

But the new GamePad is so much more than a controller–it's designed to double as a TV remote, making it a natural addition to any home entertainment. The lightweight controller will also feature a microphone, a gyroscope, an accelerometer, dual analog controls, two shoulder buttons and two triggers, a front-facing camera, and a stylus. The cameras and microphone will enable video chat, while the gyro motion controls enable the panoramic viewpoint.

Wii U Games

Thanks to the breakthrough GamePad and a slew of state–of–the–art features, games are more immersive and exciting than ever. Together your TV and GamePad provide integrated screens, where what you see on the GamePad is what you see on the TV. There's also asymmetric gameplay, meaning while some players are playing one character using the Wiimotes, another person can play against them using the GamePad.

True to Nintendo form, the games offer fun for all ages. First up is the highly anticipated NintendoLand, which offers a collection of 12 minigames in a virtual amusement park setting. You can play with family and friends as you race to collect candy, work your way through mazes, fire arrows and enemies, and more. For more adult fun, check out Zombie U and Batman Arkham City: Armored Edition. Both feature incredible graphics and gripping storylines as you fight the age old battle of good versus evil.

Even the Wii Fit got a makeover, with a special Wii Fit U edition. Improvements include more fit challenges, like a luge, trampoline, and even Dessert Course, where you shed pounds delivering desserts on a wobbling tray. It also comes with a clip that you can wear all day, and it will track your activity and the amount of calories you burn, even when doing non–Wii Fit activities. Of course, should you choose not to upgrade, the Wii U is backwards compatible with Wii Fit and all of your other favorite Wii games.

5 Wii U games you need:

  • Rayman Legends
  • ZombiU
  • The Wonderful 101
  • Pikmin 3
